A police superintendent in England and Wales earns £84,177 on promotion nationally and progresses to a maximum of £99,015 — typically over several years. The rank is paid on a national spot range: there is no separate London pay scale or flat London allowance at superintendent level. The rank is salaried with no overtime, but on-call and recall-to-duty allowances apply. Superintendents are represented by the Police Superintendents' Association (PSAEW), not the Federation, which negotiates separately on their behalf.
A police superintendent in England and Wales is paid £84,177 on promotion in 2025/26 and reaches the maximum of £99,015 nationally. The rank is on a national spot range, so there is no separate London figure. The promotion-to-superintendent jump from chief inspector top-of-scale (£74,310) is the largest single-rank uplift on the pay structure — reflecting the substantial widening of accountability that comes with the rank.
Superintendents are the operational executive of a force. The role spans divisional / BCU command, force-wide thematic responsibility (professional standards, custody, public protection, counter-terrorism), and incident- command roles in serious or pre-planned operations. Most large forces have 20-40 superintendents distributed across geographic divisions and central functions.

On division, a superintendent's day mixes strategic and tactical: chairing the daily performance meeting, reviewing high-risk investigations, signing off use-of-force authorities, attending the community safety partnership, briefing the chief officer team on major incidents. Outside divisional roles, a thematic superintendent (e.g. professional standards) leads a force-wide programme, signs off serious misconduct cases, and represents the force at national working groups. As duty gold commander, the superintendent holds strategic command of force-level critical incidents.
Promotion to superintendent is by the Senior Police National Assessment Centre (SPNAC) process — a competitive national assessment run by the College of Policing. Officers are typically chief inspectors for 3-5 years before attempting SPNAC; passing SPNAC qualifies the officer to apply for superintendent vacancies, with force-level interview as the final step. There is no separate Step 2 OSPRE exam at this level.
From superintendent upwards, officers are no longer represented by the Police Federation. The Police Superintendents' Association of England and Wales (PSAEW) represents superintendents and chief superintendents on pay, conditions and discipline matters. The Federation continues to represent ranks below — see our glossary for the full scope.
