Geographic supplements paid to UK officers in London and South East forces. Independent reference.

These are paid in addition to the base salary applicable to your rank and pay point. See our per-rank pay pages — constable, sergeant, inspector — for combined figures.
The allowance is paid as a monthly amount in your salary, typically equal across the year. It appears as a separate line on the pay slip ("London Weighting", "London Allowance", "South East Allowance", etc.). London Weighting counts towards pensionable pay; the London Allowance and South East allowance are not pensionable, but all are taxable at your normal rate.
The London Weighting and London Allowance are set to partially offset the higher cost of housing, travel and living in central London. Officers commonly observe that even with the allowance, the cost differential is not fully bridged — the allowance is a contribution, not a cost-of-living equaliser. The PFEW has long campaigned for higher allowances; the PRRB reviews the rate periodically.
