A police chief inspector in England and Wales earns £70,344 on promotion nationally and progresses across the pay points to a top-of-scale of £73,149 — typically over three years of service in the rank. Officers serving the Metropolitan Police or City of London Police are instead paid on a separate, higher London pay scale (up to £75,855) in lieu of the flat allowances. The rank is salaried — chief inspectors are not paid overtime in the federated sense, but compensatory rest and time off in lieu apply. Pay is set by the Home Secretary each year following the independent Police Remuneration Review Body recommendation.
A police chief inspector in England and Wales is paid £70,344 on promotion in 2025/26 and reaches top of scale at £73,149. Metropolitan and City of London chief inspectors are on a separate London pay scale, where the top-of-scale figure is £75,855. The chief inspector scale starts just above the inspector top of scale, which is why officers who promote from a longer-served inspector position may see only a modest immediate uplift.
The role spans operational leadership and tactical command. Chief inspectors typically run a sub-division or BCU shift, lead a specialist unit (firearms, public order, intelligence, neighbourhood policing) or act as force tactical silver commander on planned operations. The rank is salaried — there is no overtime — but time off in lieu and rest provisions apply under the Police Regulations.

Progression to top of scale takes around three years of satisfactory service in rank, with annual incremental movement on the pay points (subject to PDR). Most chief inspectors then either remain in role for several further years before applying for superintendent under the Senior Police National Assessment Centre (SPNAC), or transition into a different operational portfolio at the same rank.
On response, a chief inspector typically holds overall responsibility for a force area's response shift — a span of control covering several inspectors, multiple sergeants, and dozens of constables. On a planned operation (football, public order, royal visit, large-scale search), the chief inspector usually takes the tactical silver-commander role under a superintendent's gold strategy. In a specialist function, the rank carries force-wide responsibility for that capability — for example, the firearms commander, the neighbourhood lead, or the public-protection lead.
There is no separate Step 2 OSPRE exam for chief inspector — promotion is by competitive process within force, assessed against the College of Policing Competency and Values Framework (CVF). Most officers serve 3–5 years as an inspector before being competitive for chief inspector, though this varies by force and operational need. See our inspector promotion guide for the steps that precede chief inspector application.
Chief inspectors contribute to the Police Pension Scheme 2015 (CARE) unless on transitional protected service from the 1987 or 2006 schemes. The McCloud remedy has reshaped how pre-2022 service is treated; see our pensions hub and speak to the scheme administrator and a regulated financial adviser before any pension decision.
