Source Policy

Which sources we rely on, what we exclude, and why source quality is non-negotiable.

Unofficial independent resource — always verify with official sources (College of Policing, your force, PFEW).

Authoritative Sources We Cite

BlueLineHub draws its factual content from a defined set of authoritative UK policing and government sources. Wherever a factual claim is made in our guides and articles, it is traceable to one or more of the following:

  • College of Policing Authorised Professional Practice (APP) — the definitive source for police operational standards, investigation doctrine, and professional guidance.
  • gov.uk — Home Office publications, statutory instruments, parliamentary written answers, and official policing circulars.
  • Home Office — workforce statistics, pay determinations, and policy consultations published on gov.uk.
  • Police Regulations 2003 and Determinations — the primary statutory instrument governing conditions of service for police officers in England and Wales.
  • Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) — pay circulars, member guidance, legal updates, and campaign materials.
  • Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) — misconduct guidance, investigation outcomes, and learning reports.
  • His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) — force inspection reports, effectiveness assessments, and thematic reviews.
  • Police Remuneration Review Body (PRRB) — annual reports on officer pay and allowances.
  • Force public-facing policy documents — where a force has published a policy document, standing order, or recruitment page publicly, we may cite it with attribution and a link.

What We Don't Cite

To protect the accuracy and credibility of our content, we do not use the following as sources for factual claims:

  • Anonymous forums and police Facebook groups — including unofficial police social media communities, regardless of how active or widely followed they are.
  • Social media posts — tweets, LinkedIn posts, or TikTok videos from individuals, even serving officers or officials, unless the post is itself the story being reported on.
  • Unverified rumours and press speculation — tabloid reporting on pay, policy, or misconduct without a primary official source to corroborate it.
  • Force intranets and internal documents not in the public domain — we do not publish leaked or confidential internal force documents.
  • AI-generated summaries of regulations — AI tools can and do hallucinate legislative detail. We read primary sources directly.

Why This Matters

Police officers make real decisions based on the information they read. A misquoted pay scale, an incorrect summary of Police Regulations, or an out-of-date disciplinary procedure could lead an officer to make a career or legal decision based on wrong information. We take that responsibility seriously.

The UK policing information landscape is crowded with unofficial sources — some well-meaning but outdated, some simply inaccurate. Our source policy exists to ensure that BlueLineHub remains a platform officers can trust to give them the same standard of information they would find by reading the official documents themselves, without the time investment of navigating government and regulatory websites.

If you spot a claim on BlueLineHub that you believe lacks a credible source, please flag it via our contact page. We will investigate and either provide the source or correct the content.
