What the 'Self-declared police role' badge means — and what it doesn't.

In plain English

BlueLineHub does not verify the real-world identity of users who claim to be police officers, police staff, applicants or family members. The community badge that says “Self-declared police role” means exactly that — the user has told us they hold a policing role, but we have not checked who they are.

There is one stronger tier: users who sign in with a UK policing email domain (police.uk / pnn.police.uk and equivalents) are flagged as verified officers automatically. Because sign-in uses a magic link, holding the badge proves the person could receive email at a force mailbox at the time they signed in — proof of current force email access, not of identity, rank or conduct. This tier gates the officers-only area.

We are explicit about these limits because the brief that governs BlueLineHub forbids inventing officer endorsements or trust signals. A badge that implied verification we don't perform would be misleading, so both badges are honest about what they prove.

What we currently do

  • The badge is awarded when a user self-identifies as serving in a policing role during sign-up or profile editing.
  • Community moderators read reports against users whose claims appear inconsistent with their posting behaviour (e.g. obvious misinformation about force-specific processes, impersonation claims, hostile behaviour towards real officers).
  • Where moderators are satisfied a claim is false or misleading, the badge is removed and — depending on severity — the account is restricted or banned per the moderation policy.
  • Mock content seeded by the BlueLineHub editorial team to start discussion is never badged as a self-declared officer. It is labelled “BlueLineHub Editorial — starter discussion” instead.

What we don't do

  • We do not check a warrant card or any other piece of ID.
  • We do not verify a force email address (we have no relationship with any UK force's email system, and many forces' email domains are not publicly listed).
  • We do not ask for personal information, badge numbers, collar numbers or rank history during sign-up. The less of this we collect, the safer officers' privacy is.
  • We do not partner with the College of Policing, PFEW, the Home Office, any UK force, the IOPC, the NPCC or any other official body that could independently verify identity. BlueLineHub is independent and unofficial.

Why we don't currently verify

Hard identity verification (warrant card photo, force email round-trip, manual moderator review per applicant) is operationally expensive and creates a personal data store that — by itself — becomes a target.

We prefer a smaller, simpler, safer model: minimal personal data, a clearly labelled “self-declared” badge that does not overclaim, and moderator action on reports of misuse. As community volume grows we may revisit this — a force-email round-trip check is the most likely future addition — and we will update this page transparently if anything changes.

In the meantime, please read community posts with appropriate scepticism. Treat every reply as one person's perspective, not as official advice from a verified officer. For anything operationally, legally or financially consequential, follow the signposting on the relevant legal hub, pay & pensions hub, wellbeing hub or speak to your Federation rep, Occupational Health, GP or a regulated adviser as appropriate.

How to report a misleading badge

If you see a user with the self-declared badge whose posts suggest they are not actually who they claim to be, please report the user or specific post using the report flag on any thread. Reports go to the community moderation queue and are triaged against the moderation policy.
