The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) is the longest-established of the three Policing Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF) entry routes. It is a 3-year degree apprenticeship: you join a force as a student police officer, draw the constable on-appointment pay rate, work as a probationer constable from day one, and study academically alongside that operational duty. You graduate with a degree in Professional Policing Practice.
Forces typically require Level 3 qualifications: A-levels, BTEC, T-levels, Access to HE, or equivalent UCAS points. Specific points totals and minimum English/Maths grades vary by force — always check the recruitment page of the force you're applying to.
PCDA officers are paid throughout. You enter on the constable on-appointment rate (£31,164 national in 2025/26, higher with London or South East allowances). Annual pay-point progression applies to PCDA officers in the same way as direct recruits. Tuition is funded — you do not pay course fees. See our constable pay page.
