The UK police entry fitness test is the Job-Related Fitness Test (JRFT) — a 15-metre endurance shuttle run (commonly known as the bleep test). The pass standard for entry to most forces is level 5.4, requiring you to run 35 shuttles in approximately 3 minutes 35 seconds before the recorded bleep on each lap. The test is administered at the force's assessment centre, takes around five minutes to complete, and you may retake it (usually after a defined waiting period) if you fail. Specialist roles (firearms, dog handler, public-order) have higher fitness standards on top. The test is set by the College of Policing — most applicants train for it over 8–12 weeks of progressive interval running.
The Job-Related Fitness Test (JRFT) is the College of Policing-approved fitness assessment used by UK police forces for new recruits. For most entry routes, the JRFT consists of a 15-metre endurance shuttle run — the "bleep test" — to a pass standard of level 5.4.
The 15-metre format (rather than the older 20-metre bleep test used in schools) reflects the realistic distances involved in operational foot pursuits and confined-space movement.
The JRFT is designed to measure aerobic endurance — the cardiovascular and muscular base needed to chase, restrain, search, and remain functional after exertion. Level 5.4 sits at the lower end of athletic endurance and is achievable by most reasonably-fit adults with structured preparation, but it is not trivial for sedentary applicants.
A practical 12-week build to level 5.4:
Pair our JRFT / Bleep Test Tracker with this schedule to log progress. If you're starting from a very low base, double the timeline; if you're already an active runner, you may complete this in 6–8 weeks.
The fitness test is one component of the joining medical assessment. Officers must also meet eyesight, hearing, BMI, blood pressure and other standards. See our medical requirements guide for the full picture, and check the gov.uk Recommended Medical Standards.
