About Ministry of Defence Police

A civilian police force responsible for Ministry of Defence sites across the UK. Primarily armed guarding and security policing at military bases, nuclear sites and defence establishments.

The Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) is a civilian police force operated by the MoD under the Ministry of Defence Police Act 1987. It polices the defence estate — military bases (RAF, Army, Royal Navy), specific defence sites (Atomic Weapons Establishment, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory), international defence sites, and named nuclear facilities. It is not military police (the Royal Military Police, Royal Air Force Police and Royal Navy Police are separate service-police forces sitting under the Armed Forces Act framework).

Operational focus is armed guarding and security policing rather than general community policing. Officers are routinely armed (this is one of the highest firearms-authority ratios among UK police forces) and specialist units cover nuclear security, explosive ordnance, marine security (protection of Royal Navy vessels in dockyards), counter-intelligence liaison, and armed response for defence VIP protection. Response to conventional crime on defence sites (theft, ABH, sexual offences) also falls to MDP.

Rank structure aligns with Home Office federated ranks — Constable, Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Inspector, Superintendent, Chief Superintendent — with pay set separately by the MDP Police Federation and MoD determinations. MDP officers are federated but are represented by the Defence Police Federation rather than PFEW. Pension arrangements are civil-service pension scheme rather than the Police Pension Scheme 2015, which is a substantial difference in retirement planning.

Governance sits with the MoD Police Committee rather than a PCC or Policing Board. The force is smaller (~2,700 officers) than any Home Office force but its jurisdictional footprint is highly specific and its firearms density is unusual.

For applicants and transferees: MDP suits officers who want an armed, security-focused specialism with an unambiguous mission — protecting defence sites — and who are comfortable in a highly-vetted, tightly-controlled operating environment. Transfer to Home Office forces is possible but requires cross-training on general policing law and PACE procedure that MDP work doesn't routinely apply.
