Transferring between UK police forces

A plain-English overview of how a serving officer in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland can transfer to another UK force. Calm, practical and source-linked. Not legal advice.

Who can transfer

Most territorial forces accept transferee applications from substantive constables (and above) who have completed their probation, hold a clean disciplinary record, and meet vetting and fitness requirements for the receiving force. Some forces will accept officers part-way through probation in narrow circumstances; many will not.

Transfer windows

Forces open transferee windows when they have vacancies and capacity to onboard. Some run rolling recruitment; others advertise discrete campaigns. The Met, GMP and West Mids tend to have larger, more frequent campaigns; smaller forces may open only once or twice a year. The only reliable source is the force's official recruitment page.

The process — what to expect

  1. Confirm eligibility and current vacancies on the receiving force's recruitment page.
  2. Submit an application — typically a force form covering service history, competencies, and disclosures.
  3. Initial sift against eligibility and competency.
  4. Interview / assessment — competency-based, sometimes with a role-play element.
  5. Vetting (usually full Recruitment Vetting) and references from your current force.
  6. Medical and fitness assessment.
  7. Conditional offer, notice period, induction, and reaccreditation training where required.

What to ask before you accept

  • What is the pay supplement (if any) and how is it paid?
  • Where will I be posted in the first 12 months? Can I influence that?
  • What is the shift pattern? Will my home-life work with it?
  • What is the cost of housing and travel relative to my current force?
  • Are there opportunities into the specialism I am working towards?
  • What does reaccreditation look like — driver permits, OST refresher, etc.?

Family and welfare considerations

Relocation costs are usually borne by the officer. Schools, partner employment and childcare often determine whether a transfer is right for the family. Speak with your Federation rep, force welfare, and partner before committing — and revisit our Family hub for practical guidance.

If you decide it isn't for you

Withdrawing from an active application is normal and not held against you. If you have already moved, contact your current force's HR and your Federation rep promptly. The Rejoiner guide covers the reverse direction.
