Can You Transfer to Another Force?

Serving police officers in England and Wales can transfer to another force under Regulation 16 of the Police Regulations 2003. This allows a confirmed (attested) constable or above to apply for a position at another force without having to resign and rejoin. Transfers are subject to the receiving force having a vacancy and the officer meeting their recruitment criteria.

North Yorkshire Police accepts transfer applications when vacancies exist. The transfer ease rating for North Yorkshire Police is generally described as "moderate" — meaning that vacancies exist but competition can be significant; timing your application carefully helps. Always check the force's official recruitment page for current openings.

The Regulation 16 Process

The transfer process typically involves: (1) checking for vacancies on the force recruitment website; (2) submitting a transfer application form (which differs from new-recruit applications); (3) attending a selection interview and any required assessments; (4) vetting clearance — you will need to be re-vetted to the level required by the new force; (5) obtaining a reference from your current Chief Constable; and (6) agreeing a leaving date with your current force.

Importantly, you cannot normally be compelled to transfer — and your current force cannot unreasonably withhold consent for a reasonable notice period. If your current force raises objections, consult your Police Federation representative.

Vetting and Start Date

All transferees must pass the receiving force's vetting process. Even if you hold current vetting clearance, the new force will conduct its own assessment. This can take several weeks to several months depending on the complexity of your background and the force's current vetting caseload. Build this into your timeline.

Agree your release date with your current line management early. Most forces expect at least 28 days notice, though longer is common in practice. If you are on a probationary period at your current force (typically the first 2 years), transferring may be more complex — seek advice from your Federation rep.
