Current priorities

Retail Theft & Commercial Burglary - Continuous positive action against the most prolific retail crime offenders by the Retail Crime Officer. The Retail Crime Officer works closely along side persistently targeted businesses to support, increase reporting and prevent re-offending by serial offenders.

Whilst out on ASB patrols in the city centre, our Neighbourhood Policing Team responded to reports a report of a shop theft in progress. They responded quickly to the scene and detained a male from outside force area. The suspect was arrested and taken to York Police station and give a positive outcome disposal. Our Neighbourhood Policing teams know the importance of responding quickly to reports of shop theft to support local businesses and bring people to justice. We have been conducting regular visits to retailers to provide crime prevention advice and we are looking at other ways of sharing information and intelligence with partners to tackle to most prolific offenders.

Cycle Theft and the roll out of Bike Register in 2025 - Launch of Op Battery, our longer-term Problem Solving Plan to deal with Cycle crime and roll out of Bike Register Cycle marking through organised events in 2025.

The number of bicycle thefts in the City of York has reduced by 15% over the last 12 months as the local neighbourhood policing team continues to take a proactive approach at tackling the issue. As more people have opted to using bikes in recent years, like other places in the country York has seen an increase in cycle related crime. In response, the local Neighbourhood Policing Team have implemented a dedicated operation to prevent and disrupt offenders operating here. This includes conducting proactive patrols, using specialist tracker bikes, working with CCTV operators to monitor key areas 24/7 and hosting bike security events to reunite stolen bikes with their owners. Over the last few weeks officers have been busy issuing posters across the city to advertise free bike marking events. BikeRegister is the national cycle database which is used by all UK police forces to search for stolen bicycles and reunite them with their rightful owners. Since April 2025 officers have marked 800 bikes in York with BikeRegister. You can find your nearest bike marking event via the BikeRegister website.

Anti-Social Behaviour - Target patrol of Hotspot areas, use of Dispersal, Stop/Search, powers of arrest where grounds permit. Dealing with repeat Youth offending through staged ASB process and both Youths and/or Adults for any criminal offences committed from the behaviour.

We are deploying additional officers into our key ASB areas on days and times we know there is likely to be more demand based on previous data and current trends. ASB can cause significant impact on our communities and we are committed to tackling these issues. If you see us out and about, please come and say hello!
