National Pay Scales (PRRB 2026)
Police officer pay in England and Wales is set nationally following recommendations from the Police Remuneration Review Body (PRRB) to the Home Secretary, and applies to officers up to and including chief superintendent regardless of which force they serve in. Pay is determined by rank and, for constables and sergeants, by a spine-point progression based on years of service.
The current Constable pay scale runs from the starting salary for new recruits in their first year (often referred to as "student officer" pay while on an apprenticeship or PCDA pathway) up to the top of the constable scale for experienced officers. Sergeants, Inspectors and above have separate pay scales. For the latest confirmed figures, always refer to the College of Policing pay guidance or the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) pay resources.
British Transport Police allowance
Officers at British Transport Police receive an allowance of £3,924 per year paid on top of the national pay scales.
This is subject to tax and National Insurance in the same way as core salary, so the net benefit after deductions is lower than the gross figure. See the Pay and Pensions Hub for the current pay scales and allowance detail.
Allowances and Additional Payments
Beyond base salary, police officers may be entitled to a range of allowances depending on their role and working pattern. Key allowances include: shift disturbance allowance (SDA) for officers working irregular hours, on-call allowance if required to be available outside normal hours, dog handler allowance for officers with a police dog, and plain clothes allowance for officers in plain-clothes roles.
Overtime is paid at time-and-a-third for the first hour and time-and-a-half thereafter, or alternatively as time off in lieu (TOIL) if agreed. Rest day working attracts enhanced rates. Always refer to the Police Regulations 2003 and your force HR guidance for the precise rates applicable to your situation.
Pensions
Most officers serving today are members of the Police Pension Scheme 2015 (PPS 2015), a career average revalued earnings (CARE) scheme. Officers who were in service before April 2015 may have transitional protections. The scheme requires a member contribution of around 12–13% of pensionable pay, with an employer contribution on top.
For full details of the pension scheme, contribution rates, and how your pension is calculated, refer to the Police Pension Scheme guidance on GOV.UK and the resources available on the BlueLineHub Pay and Pensions Hub.

How BTP Rank Pay and the September Award Compare
British Transport Police officers are paid on the same national rank structure as Home Office forces. Sergeants move onto the sergeant scale (£53,568 on promotion, up to £56,208), Inspectors onto £63,768-£68,982, and Chief Inspectors onto £70,344-£73,149 — the same PRRB bands that set the constable figures above. The 2025/26 award was a 4.2% uplift (from 1 September 2025) and the 2026/27 award is +3.5% (from 1 September 2026), so BTP officers see their take-home pay change each September rather than at a fixed calendar date.
BTP's operating environment is distinct from a Home Office force: officers cover the whole rail network, including London Underground and the overground network within the M25 through the force's D Division. Two years or more of response experience is typically expected before an officer can move into one of BTP's specialist units — Counter Terrorism, CID, Football Policing, Major Stations, the Dog Unit or the Drones team — so pay progression is often tied to building the skills and case experience those roles demand.
Applying, Training, Wellbeing and Tax on BTP Pay
Applications to join BTP as a police officer, or as one of its roughly 1,600 police staff employees who support its officers, are made directly through the force's recruitment pages. Like other forces, BTP requires new officers to complete initial training — classroom-based legislation, powers and procedures, officer safety and driving — before independent patrol.
As with the geographic pay supplement described above, any allowance BTP pays is subject to tax and National Insurance in the same way as core salary, so the net effect on take-home pay is smaller than the gross figure. BTP officers have access to the same wellbeing support as officers at other forces, including occupational health and Police Federation welfare services — see the Welfare and Mental Health Support page for this force for more detail.
