Police Pension Calculator — Where to Find One
BlueLineHub does not host its own pension calculator. We explain where the official tools live and what they tell you.
Unofficial independent resource — always verify with official sources (College of Policing, your force, PFEW).
Why we don't host a calculator
Pension is high-stakes. A wrong figure on a personal calculator could lead an officer to opt out, take an unsuitable lump sum, or retire earlier than they could afford. The scheme administrator's calculator uses your actual record of service and the current scheme rules — it is the authoritative source.
BlueLineHub's job is to explain the scheme in plain English, signpost the right tool, and remind you that the decision deserves regulated financial advice. We do not aim to be a parallel administrator.
Where the official calculators live
- Your scheme administrator's calculator — XPS Pensions Group or Equiniti — accessed via your member portal. Authoritative figures.
- Gov.uk public-service pensions remedy calculator — General calculator hosted by HM Treasury for public-service pensions.
- PFEW Pensions resources — Federation-member pension calculations and guidance.
- MoneyHelper (MaPS) pension calculator — Government-backed general pension calculator — useful for sanity checks.
How to read the output
A scheme calculator will typically show:
- Accrued pension — the annual pension you have already earned, expressed at your scheme's normal pension age.
- Projected pension — the annual pension at chosen retirement ages, based on assumed continued accrual.
- Lump-sum option — the maximum tax-free lump sum at the published commutation rate, and the reduced annual pension that would accompany it.
- Early retirement reduction — the percentage reduction applied if you take the pension before normal pension age.
- Death-in-service / survivor benefits — what your dependants would receive.
For affected officers, the McCloud Remediable Service Statement is a separate document with both legacy and CARE calculations for the remedy period. See our McCloud page.
When to get advice
Calculator outputs are a starting point for conversation, not a decision. A regulated independent financial adviser with police-pension experience can model tax, inheritance, drawdown, AVC interactions, and the trade-off between lump sum and annual pension across your full circumstances. MaPS (MoneyHelper) provides free general guidance; the FCA's authorised-firm register lists regulated advisers.

Frequently asked
- Why doesn't BlueLineHub have its own pension calculator?
- Because pension is high-stakes YMYL content and the scheme administrator's calculator is the authoritative one. Building a parallel calculator on BlueLineHub would risk producing figures that diverge from official calculations, which could mislead officers making real retirement decisions. We instead point you to the canonical tools and provide a plain-English explainer for context.
- Where do I find the official police pension calculator?
- The scheme administrator (XPS Pensions Group or Equiniti, depending on your force) maintains the official calculator and reports your accrued service. Access it through your member portal, linked from your annual benefit statement, or ask force HR for the link. Some force pension administrators publish a public calculator on their own websites.
- Are the third-party police pension sites accurate?
- Independent calculators built by financial advisers or third parties (e.g. policepensioninfo.co.uk, mpspensions.co.uk) use scheme rules to model projections. They can be useful for ballparking different scenarios, but the scheme administrator's calculation is the authoritative one. Treat third-party tools as for-information-only.
- What about the gov.uk pension calculator?
- Gov.uk hosts a general public-service pensions calculator. It is a useful sanity check for very rough projections, but it is general — for the police-specific accrual rate, contributions and rules, use the scheme administrator's calculator.
