What the evidence says

Drink-driving courts (DWI courts) focus on reducing recidivism among serious DWI offenders through a structured program that includes substance misuse treatment and close supervision. Evidence indicates some reduction in crime, but it has not been statistically significant overall. While three studies reported positive effects, two did not show significant differences, and concerns regarding study design flaws are noted.

How it works

DWI courts utilize an intensive supervision model that combines punitive and supportive measures to ensure offenders adhere to treatment and supervision conditions. This method aims to decrease the likelihood of reoffending by enforcing compliance through regular monitoring and court appearances.

Implementation

Implementation details are sparse, with few studies providing insight into the intensity or dosage of the intervention. This lack limits understanding of the program's effectiveness and components.
