Serious Injury on Duty and Your Family
The support available when an officer is seriously injured on duty — rehabilitation, injury awards and ill-health retirement, and the charities that help the whole family.
A serious injury affects the whole family, not just the officer. This is a signposting guide to the rehabilitation, financial and welfare support that exists in UK policing. It is general information, not advice on your specific case — the force, the Federation and, where needed, a solicitor can advise on your circumstances.
Rehabilitation and recovery
Flint House provides police rehabilitation for serving and retired officers in England & Wales, with residential treatment and recovery programmes. Occupational health services in the force also coordinate return-to-work and adjustments.
Police Care UK supports officers and their families living with the effects of injury and psychological trauma, including practical help and grants in some circumstances.
Injury awards and ill-health retirement
Where an injury is duty-related, an injury award may be payable, and in serious cases ill-health retirement may be considered. These are governed by the police pension and injury-benefit regulations and assessed through medical processes.
The Federation can represent the officer through these processes and help the family understand what is being decided and why. Ask for decisions and the reasons behind them in writing.

Common questions
Where can an injured officer get rehabilitation?
Flint House offers police-specific rehabilitation for serving and retired officers in England & Wales, alongside the force's own occupational health support. Police Care UK helps with the wider impact on the family.
What is an injury award?
An injury award is a payment that may be available where an officer is permanently disabled as a result of an injury received in the execution of duty, under the police injury-benefit regulations. Eligibility is assessed medically; the Federation can advise and represent.
