IOPC response to claims made about our series of investigations into how South Yorkshire Police responded to allegations of child sexual abuse in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013

Key findings

• SYP failed to protect vulnerable children and young people.
• Systemic issues were identified, including failures in leadership and cultural problems.
• A dedicated investigation focused on senior officers within SYP was conducted.
• Eight officers were found to have a case to answer for misconduct and six for gross misconduct.
• Many officers retired before disciplinary action could be taken due to legislation.
• All recommendations made were accepted by SYP and associated bodies.
• Recommendations aimed at improving treatment of survivors were implemented.
• The investigation recognized the need for legislative review regarding young people involved in exploitation.

Outcome

The investigation resulted in determining that South Yorkshire Police had significant failings in protecting children. Recommendations were accepted aimed at preventing future occurrences.
